Why Does Clinics of Surgery Charge an APC?

Clinics of Surgery is an open-access journal. All articles that are accepted and published are made freely available online to readers without subscription or access fees.

To support this open-access publishing model, an Article Processing Charge (APC) is applied to accepted manuscripts. The APC helps cover the operational costs associated with the publication and long-term availability of scholarly articles.

The APC contributes toward:

  • Editorial administration and manuscript processing
  • Peer-review management and coordination
  • Manuscript preparation and copyediting
  • Typesetting and article formatting
  • Figure and table preparation
  • DOI registration and article metadata management
  • Online hosting and maintenance of published articles
  • Long-term digital preservation and accessibility
  • Website and journal platform maintenance
  • Publication administration and author support
  • Indexing and metadata dissemination where applicable
  • Maintaining the journal's open-access publishing infrastructure

The APC is charged only after a manuscript has been accepted for publication. Payment of an APC does not influence the editorial decision, peer-review outcome, or acceptance of a manuscript.

Manuscript Withdrawal Policy and Charges

Authors may request withdrawal of a manuscript before publication by contacting the editorial office.

Withdrawal requests made before the peer-review process has substantially progressed will generally not incur a withdrawal charge.

However, if a manuscript is withdrawn after substantial editorial processing, peer review, revisions, acceptance, or production work has been completed, a withdrawal charge may apply to compensate for the editorial and administrative resources already invested in processing the manuscript.

Stage of Withdrawal Withdrawal Charge
Before peer review begins No charge
After peer review has begun USD $150
After acceptance USD $159
During production / after final proofs USD $199

The applicable withdrawal charge will be communicated to the corresponding author before payment is requested.

Withdrawal charges do not apply when withdrawal is requested because of an error attributable to the journal or when the journal itself decides to withdraw or reject the manuscript.

Authors should not submit the same manuscript to another journal while it is under consideration at Clinics of Surgery. If an author withdraws a manuscript without informing the editorial office and subsequently publishes the same work elsewhere, the journal reserves the right to take appropriate editorial action.
